Ogadinma is a story about a beautiful, naive, talented and hopeful girl whose world was crushed by the world.
At the beginning of the novel, Ogadinma is trying to secure admission to the university to study. She goes to a friend of her Father’s acquaintance for help and he takes advantage of her, rapes and leaves her with an unwanted pregnant. Fear , worry and pain overwhelms her and she decides ti get an abortion.
When her father finds out he sends her away to Lagos to live with her aunt. There she is introduced to their Aunt’s brother, Tobe who is almost fifteen years old than her. After much pressure and convincing Ogadinma agrees to marry him. The marriage seems like a way to regain control of her life but that idea is short lived . He becomes abusive and toxic, she leaves the marriage despite having to leave her son behind to find her happiness.
Ogadinma is a strong feminist story that I love a lot. Described as “a feminist classic in the making” ,Ogadinma is a young girl’s story to independence. It depicts the lives which a lot of girls and women are face with till this day. Ogadinma goes through a lot of trauma and pain simply because she is a woman.
From rape to an unwanted pregnancy to an arranged abusive marriage, Ogadinma sees it all. This book made me angry. Angry that we live in such a sexist world , angry that people care more about the label of being married than their own well-being and happiness. Angry that violence, harm and abuse to women is normalized. This book made me speechless .
Ogadinma means everything will be alright. It makes me so happy that Ogadinma put herself and her happiness first at the end of the book. I believe that Ukamaka wanted this to be an awakening and a drive for revolution. It should make us angry to stand up and challenge the way everything is. I love Absolutely everything about this book.It was hard for me to believe that this was a debut work. A special thanks to my friend for introducing me to this book. Please read this book. It is the best . I rate it 5/5🌟
