“Pachinko “ by Min Jin Lee Review

Pachinko is a novel that follows three generation of family. Starting from a young Korean farmer and his wife who had a son called Hoonie He is married to Yang Jin who gives birth to Sonja. The book is centered around Sunja.

This novel is told by an omniscient narrator who expresses the characters, their personalities, plights and struggles absolutely well. It shows the struggles and experiences of a first generation Korean immigrant in Japan and those with dual cultural identities.

Panchiko is a novel that tells more than one story. It tells the individual stories of people connected by birth , blood, experiences and faith. It is a reflection of life. The reflection os seen in the characters as some are born with a silver spoon in their mouth while others spend their entire life toiling and struggling.

Overall in my opinion this is a story about survival. The will and determination to survive it all no matter what war, discrimination, imprisonment, poverty of hardship comes their way.

Pachinko is a story that needed to be told. The experiences of these characters need to be shown to the world. Because they matter . The title of the novel pachinko resonates with me as it serves as a metaphor for the history of Koreans in Japan who were constantly caught in global conflict and had to lose, win and struggle for their place and lives.

The writing was great. I felt like I was reliving the lives of the characters as I was reading their lives step by step. I cried , laughed and reminisce over the story told. I can’t wait to watch the Adaptation in a tv series in two days.I rate it 5/5🌟
