“Conversations with friends” by Sally Rooney Review

Conversations with friends is Sally Rooney’s Debut novel that follows the lives of best friends and one time lovers, Frances and Bobbi. Their lives become entwined with an older married rich couple, Melissa and Nick. Melissa is Sucessful woman while Nick is a fragile actor who hasn’t been recognized yet for his works despite lots of talent .

Bobbi takes a liking to Melissa while Frances takes a liking to Nick. They begin a relationship which cannot possibly have an happy ending

Conversations with friends is a sad novel . I couldn’t help but compare it to “Normal People”. As I find that the characters are similar as to their intrigue and complexity. Frances who the book is mostly based on fits the criteria. From social awkwardness to self harm you can’t help but feel bad for her. Frances is not a perfect character because I do not agree with some of her decisions in the book. Her character is emotional and while reading the book I wanted to make an excuse for her starting from her alcoholic father and her enabling mother. She feels like a damaged person and idolizes those she likes. But at age 21, you don’t know it all. Which brings me to the conclusion that this books is about the poor choices of a youth trying to find herself as an adult.

I feel like this is a book I can have long interesting intellectual conversations about with my friends. This book like Normal people is not for everyone. Personally I loved this book. The themes of mental illness, friendship and love are so powerfully expressed. If you like such topics then I highly recommend it . I rate it 4/5🌟
